What is dragoncon

It's a big deal. The local TV shows set up live broadcasts and the sidewalks fill up five rows deep of onlookers, snapping pictures and waving. A beautiful Black Panther float gets a rolling roar of approval from the crowd, as do the annual throngs of Deadpools and Stormtroopers.

This year, the people dressed as Wonder Woman seem to be especially popular. Little boys and girls in their superhero finest call out to them excitedly, beaming when they get a hug or a wave like they've just seen the Amazon goddess herself and not a cosplay-loving paralegal from South Carolina. Walking the route feels like a mile-long hug.

If this is a nerd thing, then the world needs more nerd things. During the day, most of Dragon Con is completely kid-friendly. But at night, people tell you with a smirk, things start to get weird. The panels get a little racier as the night goes on; there's a hentai one Google with care and an erotic fiction one and a workshop about constructing costumes for "mature audiences. If you're not looking to be titillated, Klingon Karaoke sounds like a safer option.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the parties can last until 5 or 6 in the morning. Throngs of people bounce on the dance floor as lasers splay out above their heads.

If you close your eyes you could almost imagine this to be a normal party, but then you'd miss the man in the exceedingly creepy Pennywise outfit standing stock-still in the middle of the room, his balloons hovering above the revelers.

You'd miss the blow-up T-Rex in the corner, waddle-dancing with a blow-up unicorn. A few blocks away, a bacchanalia is brewing in the courtyard of the Sheraton, and the spicier side of the con that people keep talking about starts to come into focus. The hotel pool is full of people who have shed their armor and corsets in favor of swimsuits.

Around the outside of the pool, a woman in the remnants of some sort of steampunk outfit has pulled up her skirt and is being spanked with a paddle while a small crowd watches. She's clearly running the show. A few yards away, a group of other women are topless except for pairs of gigantic googly eyes covering up a few critical centimeters of breast. Both came to Dragon Con from L.

A ring of hotel rooms opens out onto the scene, and people in various states of dress file in and out of them, giggling. Everyone is holding a drink. The greenery and wrought iron in the courtyard give the whole thing a romantic air, and for all of the sins tucked away in this little pleasure garden, it's a rather respectful scene.

The music isn't too loud, the conversation isn't too raucous; the bodies are never quite nude. Can you be well-behaved while misbehaving? Fully costumed revelers are still trickling along the streets, refueling or regrouping, as night flirts with morning. A million little human dramas have played out over the evening.

Someone can't find their bag. Someone has lost their friends. Someone drank too much and now they're crying for no good reason. Images of pleasant dissonance are everywhere. A Rocket the Raccoon takes off his mask to crush a slice of late-night pizza. The spectacle always attracts large crowds, with thousands of local attendees on top of those taking part in the convention.

Hundreds of cosplayers walk the mile long parade route, accompanied by numerous fan vehicles. Highlights from this years parade include, a menagerie of DeadPools, most of which were fun mashups with other fandoms , Jawas and their own SandCrawler vehicle, Captain America on his motorcycle, bellydancers, the Lakewood High School Marching Band, Stormtroopers. The parade is always a delight. It is a showcase of cosplay and fandom and is truly a must see attraction for DragonCon. DragonCon is the convention that never stops.

To some, it only starts to pick up after the sun goes down and the parties start. Different themed parties and events happen each evening and always attract large crowds and even more fun cosplays. This year kicked off with the Wakanda Welcomes the World party presented by the new Diversity track on Thursday night. Also on Thursday night was the Bunny Hutch party, where cosplayers mash their favorite fandoms with the Playboy aesthetic. Later in the weekend, the Yule Ball was a popular event, with the line stretching through the hotel for hours.

This event takes place off site and requires additional admission, but offers the chance to see some amazing cosplay against the backdrop of the beautiful Georgia Aquarium. Many cosplayers dress as aquatic themed characters but some just bring their A game. A magnificent cosplay of the Monkey King took home the top prize.

If you travel to the Marquis level of the Marriot, the tables that ring the elevators represent the various bands and artists performing at the convention over the course of the weekend. Additionally, the Filk Track had its own spectacular lineup of performers this year. Filk is a musical genre, primarily present at conventions, and focus on fandom, fantasy, and science fiction themes.

Typically, filk is a type of folk music, though that distinction has broadened over the years to incorporate many different sounds. These concerts are always a blast.

I always leave with my sides hurting from laughing so hard at what these talented individuals come up with. Open for 24 hours during the 5 days of DragonCon, the Gaming Rooms offer almost every type of game you could want.

This year the gaming was even more popular than in previous years. It is always amazing to see so many people interested in tabletop gaming in such a fashion.

The interest in this element of DragonCon has definitely increased in recent years. This year, once again the game room played host to numerous free to play arcade games. There is something amazing about watching a woman in full steampunk costume playing pinball for 30 minutes.

There is so much to do that it is easy to get overwhelmed or miss something, but there are a few other activities that you might find interesting to get you away from the crowds. In the lower level of the Hyatt, there are rooms that play movies non-stop starting on Thursday and ending on Monday, this year movies including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Labyrinth, and more. On thursday night, there are Wrestling matches. Drum Circles gather every evening.

You can paint your own miniatures in the gaming hall or attend tea-pot racing with the Alternative History track. The costuming track gives workshops on how to create your own cosplays, and successful authors teach you how to write your own novel.

There is always something going on, even far away from the large crowds. Every year, DragonCon chooses a local charity to work with for the year. The official charity for was Literacy Action, which works with undereducated adults in the Atlanta area gain better literacy, life, and work skills. Thom passed away over the summer. In addition to its charity efforts, DragonCon also hosts an annual blood drive. Throughout the con, cosplaying volunteers direct attendees to the largest convention-based blood drive in the nation.
