What seems to be good intentions by game developers backfired on them, unfortunately. Because of this motion blur is one of the first graphics settings gamers disable. Although it makes the game realistic it negatively affects gameplay in various degrees.
Imagine this. You are sitting in a fast-moving car while looking outside. What you seeing at the moment in time is called motion blur. Motion blur is the blurring or unfocusing of objects when you moving at high speeds or there is a rapid change in movement. In games, it is a graphics setting that causes your surroundings to blur when your main character moves very quickly or the camera is rotated whilst stationary.
It is sort of an aesthetic feature much similar to shadows, depth of field, dynamic reflections etc. All features designed to make the game look more realistic. Naturally, your eyes blur out objects or surroundings when you are moving fast. Other times the object is moving fast and becomes a blur to your eyes or camera. Motion blur is one of the most disliked graphics features in the gaming community.
Because they make the game unpleasant to look at. Natural-looking movement requires some degree of blur. Not too much blur — if you have too much, then you have visible streaks or a ghostly appearance. But enough blur to make the motion seem much more natural.
The movement seems very close to what we see every day in the real world. There are a lot of frames per second, so the movement is more like what we see with our eyes. The blur is exactly right for very natural motion. This is the look we associate with film, with movies, and TV dramas. Yet, it still appears to be natural, pleasing movement. With film, each frame is usually exposed for half of its duration.
But if some footage was shot with a high shutter speed , such as when a camera with auto shutter speed adjust records in very bright light, it may have that unnatural or choppy-looking motion we mentioned. Adding some motion blur to that kind of footage can help make the motion look more natural. But the chief reason to use motion blur is with text or graphic animations you add in post. It could be moving text like credit rolls or text pinned to a moving object. In this case, the camera cannot focus on a particular surrounding as it is changing constantly and the surroundings appear to be blurry.
Try this by moving your Mouse rapidly while keeping your character stationary. You will find that the camera cannot focus on the surroundings, and the nearby areas appear blurred. If you run a game with motion blur enabled, then your fps frame rate will be lower than when it was disabled. This applies to most genre of games excluding racing games.
Also, the blurriness of the surroundings reduces the visual quality of the game. The game appears unattractive. Turning it on while playing these games can seriously decrease your fps thereby decreasing your in-game performance. While playing Racing Games, you can turn Motion Blur On because the surroundings matter little and the only focus is the road ahead. So if your character is running forward, his surroundings will be out of focus.
The optimist will say that motion blur is a good setting to have on when playing games, at least in one player games anyway. This is especially true in racing games, where motion blue is probably most used. Well, the pessimist would probably argue that the only reason motion blur is a thing in games is that it makes lower refresh rates Hz better on the eye. You can also look at your depth of field settings too, which can also make things a little easier.
If this is the case, then there is more that you can do to get rid of any motion blur in your game. Something else worth checking out in the settings of your game is something called chromatic aberration.
